‘Englishman in New York’ was the 3rd single from Sting’s 1987 album ‘…Nothing Like the Sun’.
The song is partly about Sting but also about English writer, actor and gay icon Quentin Crisp.
They met the year before and Sting was moved by Crisp’s stories of intolerance in 1930’s and 1940’s Britain. Crisp tried to enlist into the army during World War 2 but was rejected because of his sexuality. I guess this inspires the lyric in the verse after the bridge.

I didn’t want to do a straight cover in so I’ve taken a fingerstyle acoustic guitar approach and done it with a folk vibe. Hope you enjoy!
