This was the practice for my weekly ‘One Song Gig’ livestream – a cover of Nick Drake’s “Been Smoking Too Long”. I’m still getting used to fingerstyle guitar after a lifetime of hybrid-picking but the softer attack is more authentic to Nick Drake’s tone and I’m loving the challenge.
I remember as a young student aged 18 or 19 my friend Matt Town played me a cassette of Nick Drake’s compilation album “Time of No Reply” and as someone who mainly listened to heavy rock – Jimi Hendrix, Free, Led Zep – the purity of Nick Drake’s music totally transfixed me and was the start of my love of contemporary English Folk music and inspired me to buy my first steel string acoustic.
Still incredible to me that Nick Drake died having only sold about 10,000 albums – never knowing the enormous impact and influence his beautiful music would have on generations to come.
