City Girl – Charlotte Campbell
This is the new single taken from London based singer/songwriter Charlotte Campbell’s 3rd album, Endless Light, which was crowdfunded and released in October 2017.
The song tells the story of a girl who’s had her heart broken one too many times so she decides to leave the city. She soon realises that she’s unable to leave the city. Sure she can find solitude in the country but she realises she needs to be around people. Deep down, she wishes she would be the one who is the heartbreaker.
TAKING A ‘CLOSER’ LOOK
Productionwise, the vocal could have done with being a little more to the fore as it does feel a little too back in the mix in the latter half of the track. That said, it is a clean vocal. The track isn’t overdone with instruments – piano, drums, bass, acoustic guitars, strings and each instrument has its own space. There’s enough variation between the song sections to keep the listener interested. There is unusual use of starting with an upright bass in the first pre chorus and then switching to an electric bass for the rest of the track.
This is a good start to the year and I’ve ordered the album based on this single.
