Lauren Ray – Cafe Nero,

byline: Mike Wheeler

On a cold and wet December day, I headed down to Guildford to see Lauren Ray at Caffe Nero
Entering the coffee shop I was greeted by a welcoming warmth and the smell of fresh coffee. Lauren Ray was already set-up in one corner of the Coffee Shop with her keyboard. The windows were steamed and provided a festive backdrop.

Lauren opened with Her New Single…  “Two Days”

The track was co-written with The Songwriting Academy’s Martin Sutton.

Her set then mixed between tracks from her excellent debut album, We Will Need Courage, plus some covers and a couple of Christmas songs. A soft spot for One Direction surfaced with a cover of Harry Styles’ Two Ghosts and an excellent rendition of Gloria Gaynor’s I Will Survive at a slower tempo which showed that a good song will transfer to other genres.

Her velvet coated voice and confident playing made for a solid performance. The set was an hour long and I could have easily listened to a longer set.

The only downside to the gig was the constant barista accompaniment of clanking crockery and steaming coffee.

A brief chat with Lauren at the end revealed that she will be writing new material in the New Year and I for one, will be looking forward to hearing some more …

Here’s the set list ..

Two Days
Sunday Morning
Have yourself a merry little Christmas
One of the lucky ones
Two Ghosts
Come To me
Unexpected Man
I will survive
Cold cold Heart
Paying for Love
White Christmas
