Summer’s here (for this week at least) and Charlie Austen was playing support to Nine Below Zero’s sold out gig at 229 The Venue in London. Charlie is actually part of Nine Below Zero so was supporting herself.
The Nine Below Zero crowd are a slightly older crowd with the band having been around since 1977 so it was interesting to see how they’d take to Charlie’s music which is a completely different style to that of Nine Blow Zero.
Heading on to tip toe to reach the parts other performers cannot reach, employing syncopated rhythms and cadences, Charlie had the non bar audience enthralled. She shows a lyrical mastery way beyond her years. Conjuring up images (“sat by the docs watching ships’” from Copenhagen) that instantly made you want more.
Charlie is such an assured performer. She was born for the stage. Tonight, she was ably aided on percussion by her brother, Oli. This was the first time they’d performed together although they seemed like they’d been performing together for years.
Charlie is definitely one to watch as she will continue to rise.
